| Troubleshooting Monitor Not Responding
- Most newer monitors are equipped
with a two-color capable LED that is very helpful when troubleshooting. Almost all
monitors are equipped with at least a one-color led that tells the user whether or not the
monitor is receiving power.
- If your monitor has a two-color
capable LED it will change color after being plugged in and turned on when it is correctly
connected to the computer and starts receiving a signal (the computer must be turned on).
- The best way to check the severity
of the problem is to disconnect the monitor from both the computer and the electrical
outlet and move it to another computer and electrical outlet, both of which you're sure
are functioning correctly. If the monitor responds correctly there then either your
computer has a video card problem or the electrical outlet you had been using is bad. If
the monitor does not respond correctly there then you have a malfunctioning monitor and it
needs to be repaired or replaced.
- The next step is to try connecting
someone else's monitor into your computer, but into a different electrical outlet that
you're sure is functioning. If the other monitor works on your computer then the problem
lies in the electrical outlet. Contact your RA and have him look into getting it repaired.
If the monitor does not respond when plugged into your computer and into the good
electrical outlet, then you have a video card setup problem -- most likely you will have
to replace your video card and reinstall it to fix the problem.
Mouse and /or Keyboard Not
Responding
- Restart the computer,
watching the monitor (before Windows loads) to see if there are any messages about the
computer's ability to detect the mouse and keyboard.
- Confirm that the mouse and
keyboard are both plugged correctly into the back of the computer.
- It is possible to have connected
these devices to the other devices port. There is usually a mouse and keyboard picture
labeling the ports on the back of the computer. If the devices are connected to the wrong
port, shut down the computer, reverse the connections, and turn the computer back on.
- Even if the devices are connected
properly, it is possible that they have come loose from their port. Shut down the
computer, disconnect and reconnect the devices, and turn the computer back on.
- Try connecting another
mouse/keyboard to determine where the problem is. Shutdown the other computer before
removing its mouse or keyboard. Shut down your computer before changing out the mouse or
keyboard. If the other mouse or keyboard works, your mouse or keyboard will have to be
replaced. If the other mouse or keyboard does not work, you have a problem with your
hardware configuration, call 713 776 2100
