| Cleaning up your hard drive with Disk Defragmenter.
You may want to run Disk Defragmenter to clean up your hard drive. Disk
Defragmenter will reorganize the information into chunks of space, instead of having it
floating around. To run Disk Defragmenter:
- From the Desktop, double-click on the My Computer
icon.
- Now, right-click your mouse on the drive you want to defragment.
- Click Properties when the pop-up menu appears.
- Once you are there, click the Tools tab.
- Under the Defragmentation section, click Defragment Now.
- Follow on-screen instructions (these may vary due to the program you
have).

| Changing which program opens with certain file types.
You may want to change what program will open with certain file types.
To do this:
- Double-click the My Computer
icon on
your desktop.
- From the View menu click Options.
- Click the File Types tab.
- Now, select the association you want to change.
- Click Edit.
- Click Open under the Actions section.
- Click Edit and choose which program you want the file to open with.
- Click OK.

| Checking to see how much disk space you have left. You can
check to see how much disk space is free on your hard drive by simply looking in My
Computer. To do this:
- Double-click on the
icon.
- Right-click the icon of the drive whose disk space you want to check.
- Click Properties.
A nice pie chart will appear with the information. |
| Having My Computer show all hidden and system files. You can
have My Computer display all file types since, by default, it hides system and hidden
files. To do this:
- Double-click the
icon.
- Open the View menu.
- Click Options.
- Click the View tab.
- Select the "Show all Files" radio button.
- Click OK to save your settings.

| Printing out a list of your system settings. To print out a
list of your system settings:
- Right-click the
My Computer icon.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Click the Print button.
- Choose the type of list you want to be printed.
- Click OK.

| Speeding up your Start menu Windows 98. You can speed up the time it takes for the Start menu to respond when you are
using it. Doing this involves editing the registry. We recommend having a backup of the
registry before continuing. To do this:
- Click the
button.
- Click
- In the Open field type regedit and click OK.
- Once you are in the Registry Editor, navigate your way to the following
folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop
- Once you are there, right-click the right side of the screen.
- Select New and click String Value.
- Name it "MenuShowDelay" (without quotes).
- Now, double click on it and in the Value section type a number between 1
and 10.
- The lower the number, the faster it will respond.
- Click OK.
- Exit and restart your computer.
